Healthy hip and knee function is essential for walking, climbing stairs, exercising, working, and maintaining independence. Pain in either area can alter movement patterns and place additional stress on surrounding muscles and joints.

Symptoms can include:
- Pain during walking or stairs
- Stiffness after sitting
- Reduced range of motion
- Discomfort with squatting or bending
- Activity-related soreness
- Difficulty returning to sports or exercise
- Muscle weakness or reduced stability
Evaluating Hip and Knee Pain
Evaluation considers the location and behavior of symptoms as well as mobility, strength, joint function, movement mechanics, and relevant activities.
Because hip, knee, lower-back, and foot mechanics can influence one another, examination may extend beyond the precise location where discomfort is felt.
Conservative Care Options
Depending on the findings, therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation may be used to improve mobility, strength, and movement mechanics. Chiropractic care may address relevant joint restrictions, and high-power laser therapy may be considered for selected musculoskeletal complaints.
Shockwave therapy may be considered when an appropriate chronic tendon or soft-tissue condition is identified.
When Referral Is Appropriate
Referral may be recommended after significant trauma, inability to bear weight, substantial swelling, suspected fracture, a locked joint, significant instability, signs of infection, or other findings requiring medical or orthopedic assessment.
