Intervertebral discs provide cushioning and contribute to movement between the bones of the spine. Disc changes do not always cause symptoms, but certain disc-related problems can contribute to back or neck pain and, in some cases, symptoms traveling into an arm or leg.
At EvexiaRx - Large Chiropractic Associates in Monaca, PA, an individualized evaluation can help determine whether conservative musculoskeletal care is appropriate for disc-related complaints.
Request an AppointmentPossible Disc-Related Symptoms
Depending on the area involved, symptoms may include:
- Localized back or neck discomfort
- Pain aggravated by certain positions
- Reduced spinal mobility
- Radiating arm or leg symptoms
- Tingling or numbness
- Difficulty tolerating prolonged sitting
- Muscle weakness when nerve involvement is present
Evaluation Comes Before Treatment
An imaging finding alone does not determine a treatment plan. EvexiaRx - Large Chiropractic Associates considers symptoms, history, physical examination findings, functional limitations, and available imaging together.
The examination may assess movement, strength, joint function, neurological findings, and how particular positions influence symptoms.
Non-Surgical Services That May Be Considered
For appropriately selected patients, spinal decompression/traction may be used to apply controlled forces to the spine.
Depending on the findings, treatment may also incorporate chiropractic care, high-power laser therapy, and therapeutic exercise or rehabilitation.
When Referral Is Appropriate
Not every disc problem is suitable for conservative management. Progressive neurological deficits, severe weakness, bowel or bladder changes, significant trauma, or other concerning findings warrant appropriate medical evaluation.
Referral may also be recommended when advanced imaging, specialist assessment, or another form of treatment is indicated.
